Massage is often used locally to prepare the patient for an adjustment by the chiropractor. It relieves muscle tension and warms up the area by bringing circulation to that area, making the joints more pliable and easily adjusted. Massage can also be good for helping the body to stay in alignment longer after an adjustment by elongating and relaxing the muscles.
The pain that brings you to a chiropractor often involves problems in the musculoskeletal system. Accidents at home, work or play can leave sprains, strains and other soft tissue injuries. Massage improves general and local circulation and brings nutrients needed at a cellular level to heal damaged tissues. Using well-documented laws of physiology, a trained massage therapist often works with four aspects of soft-tissue dysfunction:
Poor circulation—Muscles that stay in spasm for a period of time do not have full blood flow to the area due to the constriction of the blood vessels. This results in reduced circulation, known as ischemia, where waste products can accumulate resulting in pain. Massage reduces ischemia and pain by increasing circulation to the area and flushing out the tissues.
Trigger points—Trigger points are painful knots in muscles and tendons that may refer pain to an area further away. Trigger points may be caused by trauma or by chronic tension in an area by repetitive use of a particular muscle. Trigger point therapy will often deactivate the trigger point and relieve the pain it causes.
Nerve Constriction—Nerves often run through and between muscles and alongside bones. Muscle tension can put pressure on nerves resulting in constriction, which interferes with the free flow of nerve impulses and can cause pain or tingling in the target area. Massage alleviates the constriction of nerves due to muscle tension.
Postural Distortion—Postural distortion is the subtle shifting of the body to accommodate chronic muscle spasm, poor posture or contraction. Postural strain, whether from traumatic injury or from a gradual change, can create pain, fatigue, muscular binding and joint restriction. Therapeutic massage can reduce muscle spasms, soften adhesions and scar tissue and allow the body to be in better alignment when used in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments.
